How to use it

From your front door to a list Google Ads accepts

Four steps: map the drive time first, then extract the ZIP codes, then paste them into Google Ads, so the service area you know from experience becomes the location targeting in your campaign.

  1. 1

    Find your business

Type the business address in the search box, or pick Drive time and click the spot on the map. A yellow pin marks the location; drag it if it landed a street off. The tool covers the United States.

  2. 2

Set the drive time and rings

Move the slider to how far people drive to you, from 5 to 60 minutes. Leave it as one area for a single list, or split it into 2 or 3 rings: with 30 minutes and 3 rings you get the ZIPs within 10, 20 and 30 minutes as separate lists. The map draws the reachable area along the real roads as coloured rings: orange for the nearest, yellow for the middle, teal for the outer.

  3. 3

Extract and check the ZIP codes

Happy with the rings? Click Extract the ZIP codes. Every ZIP inside appears on the right and is shaded white on the map, over the coloured rings. Remove a whole location with its chip, rub single ZIPs out with Erase, or switch to Pick and click ZIPs to add or drop them. Tick 'partly inside' for codes the area only touches. Hide ZIP codes takes you back to the plain map at any time.

  4. 4

    Copy it in Google's format

The default format is the one Google's own help uses for ZIP codes: the ZIP, a comma and the state, one per line. Copy all, or pick a ring above the list and copy just that one. In Google Ads open the campaign, then Settings, then Locations, Advanced search, Add locations in bulk, paste, make sure the country is United States and add them all. Repeat per ring or per batch of 1,000.

Circle or drive time

A radius is a shape on a map. A drive time is how your customers get to you.

Google Ads can target a radius around a point without any list. The drive-time map earns its keep when roads, rivers and traffic make the real service area anything but round.

Radius targeting

One circle, treated the same everywhere

Pick a point, set the distance, save. If the roads around you run evenly in every direction and every part of the circle is worth the same to you, Google's radius is quick and easy to explain. Our ZIP Code Radius Map turns it into a ZIP list when you want the edges.

Drive-time area

Follows the highway, stops at the river

Twenty minutes is fifteen miles down the interstate and five across town at rush hour. A drive-time area stretches where the roads are fast and shrinks where they are slow, so the ZIP list covers the people who would actually come, and leaves out the ones across a river with one bridge or behind a mountain pass.

Whichever you pick, check the location option under the targeted locations. Google's default, Presence or Interest, also reaches people who show interest in the area from somewhere else. Presence limits ads to people who are in, or regularly in, the area, which is usually what a local service business wants.

Rings and bid adjustments

Three rings, three bids

Split a 30-minute drive into 3 rings and you get three lists: the ZIPs within 10 minutes (orange), within 20 (yellow) and within 30 (teal). Every ZIP is its own location target in Google Ads, so each ring can carry its own bid adjustment or live in its own campaign.

Nearest ring

Your core. Bid up.

The ZIPs ten minutes from the door are where the phone rings most and the drive is no objection. Give this list its own bid adjustment upward, or its own campaign with the budget it deserves, and let the ad copy name the neighbourhoods.

Middle ring

Standard bids, watch the numbers.

Twenty minutes out is still a normal trip for most services. Run it at the standard bid and check the locations report after a few weeks: the ZIPs that convert move up a ring, the ones that never call move down.

Outer ring

A test, not a given.

At thirty minutes people have closer options. Start this ring with a lower bid or a small separate budget, and drop the ZIPs that only bring browsers. Because it is its own list you can switch it off without touching the rest.

Three rules from Google's help: up to 1,000 locations per paste, one country per paste, and a ZIP is the five digits only. When a list is longer than 1,000 the copy buttons split it into batches for you, and with rings you can copy one ring at a time.

What the map shows

Drive times, boundaries and the Google Ads filter

01

Drive times are estimates

The reachable area is calculated by Valhalla, an open-source routing engine, on OpenStreetMap roads: posted speed limits where they are mapped, typical speeds for the road type where they are not, and no live traffic. Rush hour reaches less; a quiet Sunday reaches more.

02

ZIP boundaries are Census ZCTAs

The shapes are ZIP Code Tabulation Areas from the 2020 Census, simplified for the web. They follow the ZIP codes the Postal Service uses for delivery but are built from census blocks, so an edge can sit a street away from the real route change. 31,214 shapes are on the map; 627 point-only ZIPs show as dots.

03

Only codes Google Ads can target

The list is filtered to the 31,841 US postal codes in Google's own location target file (2026-03-31), so every code you copy is one Google Ads will accept. Codes that exist but cannot be targeted are left out rather than pasted and rejected.

Questions

Drive-time targeting in Google Ads, answered

How accurate is the drive time?

The area is worked out by Valhalla, an open-source routing engine, on the OpenStreetMap road network. It follows real roads and uses the posted speed limit where OpenStreetMap has one and a typical speed for the road type where it does not, so a 20-minute area stretches further along a highway than through a town centre. It is an estimate for normal driving conditions, not a promise for any one trip.

Does it include traffic?

No. The drive times are for free-flowing traffic at the legal speed. In rush hour the real 30-minute area is smaller, so if your customers mostly come in the evening peak, set a shorter time than the one you have in mind, or split the area into rings and treat the outer ring as a test.

Why does the drive time stop at 60 minutes?

The free routing server the tool uses caps one request at 60 minutes, and for a local business that is already a long way: at highway speed it is around 50 miles in every direction. If you need more, map two or three locations along the way and combine them, or use the ZIP Code Radius Map for a plain distance.

Should I use a drive-time ZIP list or Google's radius targeting?

Google's radius is a circle, and a circle treats a 10-mile stretch of interstate the same as 10 miles across a river with one bridge. A drive-time area follows the roads, so the list stops where your customers would stop. It also gives you edges you can edit: remove the county you do not serve, exclude the ZIPs that never convert, and bid up the ones ten minutes away.

Can I map more than one location?

Yes. Place the first location, then click Add another location and place the next one. Each location gets its own chip with its own drive time, and the list combines them without duplicates, so two branches or a shop plus a depot go into one campaign in a single paste.

What do the rings do?

By default the tool splits your drive time into 3 rings. With 30 minutes that means three lists: ZIPs within 10 minutes, within 20 and within 30 (the full area). The rings are coloured orange, yellow and teal from the nearest out, the extracted ZIPs are shaded white on top, and the buttons above the list let you show and copy one ring's ZIPs at a time. A common setup is one campaign or one bid adjustment per ring: up for the nearest, standard for the middle, down or off for the outer ring until it proves itself. Choose One area if you just want a single list.

Is anything uploaded or stored?

No account, no upload. The ZIP data is fetched by your browser and the matching happens on your computer. Two things leave the page: the address you type goes to the Photon geocoder to find its coordinates, and the coordinates of the pin go to the Valhalla routing server to draw the drive-time area. Your selection lives in the page link, so you can bookmark or share it.

Why is a ZIP code missing, or shown as a dot?

Some ZIPs have no area: PO-box-only codes, single large buildings or organisations. They are shown as dots and count when the dot falls inside the drive-time area. ZIPs that Google Ads cannot target are left out on purpose, so the list you copy never contains a code Google will reject. And a ZIP just outside the shaded edge is simply more than the set number of minutes away by road; tick 'partly inside' to include codes the area only touches.

Data and services: drive-time areas by Valhalla on OpenStreetMap data, public server run by FOSSGIS e.V.; ZIP boundaries from the US Census Bureau (ZCTA 2020 cartographic boundary file, public domain); ZIP list and place names from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0); location targets from the Google Ads API geotargets file; base map by OpenFreeMap © OpenMapTiles; address search by Photon. Drive times and boundaries are approximations. Check any ZIP that matters in Google Ads before you spend on it. Need a plain radius, or to draw the area by hand? Use the ZIP Code Radius Map.
